Intra Discal Electro Thermal Therapy (IDET)

Intra Discal Electro Thermal Therapy (IDET) is a new procedure used to treat herniated or torn spinal discs. Prior to the IDET, a discography procedure must be performed to confirm diagnosis. When an IDET is performed, a needle is inserted and a catheter is placed in the spinal disc. Afterwards, controlled levels of thermal heat are conducted through the catheter and into the disc. Thermal heat allows the disc wall to thicken its collagen and reduce a hernia or close tears as well as partially destroying the nerves that supply the disc thereby reducing the painful stimulus.
